How Companies marginalize their Future Leaders without knowing it

Leadership posts are one of the hardest positions to fill in any organization. Hiring managers can end up second guessing and promoting the wrong candidates in their organizations which can marginalize other potential future leaders from their their own teams.

After having candidates go through a stringent process of interviews & personality tests, why do we still doubt the capabilities of our candidates to carry out their roles when the time comes? The answer is pretty simple. Because we don’t have a clear reference of our candidates’ leadership & managerial skills.

There are plenty of qualities that you need to measure in order to find out if an employee is potentially a great leader or not. A successful manager should not only be recognized because his or her team managed to hit their targets. This is definitely one of the indicators, but it shouldn’t be the only reason for selecting a candidate.

As Employers, we also need to ensure that our managers can positively influence their team members if we want them to perform and develop further. Retaining your best talents is only possible if your leaders practice a holistic approach on how they relate and manage their people.

Finding the Diamond in the Rough

When we try find the best leaders to help us move our business objectives from point A to point B, how are we absolutely sure that he or she is capable? Can we honestly say that the interviews were extensive enough in order for us to find out that what their skill sets are? Talented leaders may not reveal themselves to you in the usual way. You may have an employee who doesn’t immediately present himself as a leader, but is already someone who’s highly capable to carry out responsibilities to help your company grow.

On the contrary, some may have already been promoted as leaders because they initially looked ‘able’, but a lot of their team members actually dreaded working with them. There’s a diamond in the rough in all organizations. All you need to do is to identify them and provide a small form of training so they can perform at optimum levels as your future leaders. But how do you find them?
